What is the YMCA ?

YMCA is a World Wide Movement of over 40 million members in 130 countries around the World. In India alone the YMCA has over 700 different units with more than one-lakh members. YMCA movement strives to meet the challenges and aspirations of YOUNG people in their own cultural contexts and aims at equitable, sustainable and harmonious development of individuals and / communities. The motto of the organization is the development of Body, Mind and Spirit, a wholesome development of human personaliry.

 

Young Men's Christian Association is the biggest International Organization for youth. Since its foundation in London in 1844 by Sir George Williams the YMCA has maintained a Christian central purpose. It is founded on Christ's ideal of sacrificial love and service. Its activities are prompted by concern for our rellowmen. It welcomes to Its fellowship young men of all faith, creed and religion and those of none.

World Alliance of YMCAs

The World Alliance of YMCA's was founded in Paris in 1855, wirh a parriciparion of 99members of38 YMCAs from 9 countries. Now it has grown to 40 million members in 15000 YMCA's spread across 130 countries. The head quarrers of World Alliance is at Geneva, Switzerland,

Asia Alliance of YMCAs

The Asia alliance looks after the YMCAs of Asia Pacific Region in 20 countries including India with its head quarrers in Hong Kong.

National Council of YMCAs of India

The first YMCA in India was started at Calcutta in 1854. The National Council of YMCAs in India was born in 1891 at Madras in a gathering coming from 35 Indian YMCAs. Today it has grown to more than 700 YMCAs with membership of 1.10 Lakhs. Over 60% of the membership consists of non-Christians.The National Council with it's headquarters in New Delhi has com pleted 114 years of service to the nation. The Indian YMCA has pioneered innovative programmes aimed at Spiritual, Cultural, Intellectual and Physical development of all persons in society and the services rendered are widely recognized and accepted allover the country.

Physical Education, Rural Reconstruction, Relief and Refugee work, Boys homes, Camping, Environmental protection, Eradicarion of social evils, Human rights, Social Justice and Righrs of Women are some of the thrust areas where Indian YMCAs contribute to the national cause. During the centenary of the National Council of YMCAs of India in 1991 the Government of India recognized the services of Indian YMCA by issuing a postal stamp.
